Andrew Sprague is a business and technology law lawyer based in Toronto, Ontario, Canada.


Overview

As a member of the Corporate/Commercial law, Information Technology law and Intellectual Property law groups at Miller Thomson LLP, Andrew’s legal practice includes a full range of business, information technology and intellectual property law matters and he has developed an expertise in the information technology area.

Andrew advises small, medium-sized and large companies in the private sector (including publicly traded companies), and various government ministries and agencies, municipalities, hospitals, colleges and other institutions in the public sector.

Andrew also provides advice on legal matters relating to copyright and trade-marks, the use of the Internet, and consumer protection. 

In his corporate/commercial law practice, Andrew provides advice on the purchase and sale of businesses, shareholder arrangements and partnership arrangements.


Involvement in Information Technology Sector

Andrew is the Public Affairs Liaison for the Information Technology and Electronic Commerce Section of the Ontario Bar Association (OBA) and is also a Past Chair of the Toronto Computer Lawyer's Group (TCLG) (2008-2009).


Publications

Andrew is a member of the Editorial Board of the Ontario Bar Association's flagship publication, Briefly Speaking, which is published six times a year and is distributed to more than 17,000 lawyers, judges and law students.

He is one of two co-authors of the "E-Commerce" chapter in Business Laws of Canada (published by West, a Thomson Reuters business), is currently preparing a chapter on "Consumer Protection" for Electronic Commerce – A Practitioner’s Guide (published by Carswell), and is also a frequent contributor to the Mann’s Technology Law newsletter published by Carswell as well as other publications.


Previous Experiences

Prior to joining Miller Thomson LLP, Andrew completed his apprenticeship with and practiced at Goodman and Carr LLP (which partnership was subsequently dissolved in March 2007), and he has previously been seconded to the Ontario Securities Commission (Capital Markets Branch), where he assisted on a wide variety of regulatory issues.

While studying business and political science at Wilfrid Laurier University, Andrew managed and oversaw the activities of the Wilfrid Laurier University Students’ Union (WLUSU) Legal Resources Office.


Commitment to Mentorship

Andrew is actively involved in the recruitment, training and mentorship of summer and articling students at Miller Thomson LLP.

As part of his legal practice, Andrew receives regular direct interaction with and mentorship from a practitioner recognized as a leading technology lawyer by publications such as Lexpert, Chambers Global Guide, the International Who's Who of Internet and e-commerce Lawyers, and Best Lawyers in Canada.
